Next month, a $3.7 million project to reconstruct the Somerdale Road Bridge in Gloucester Township will commence. The initiative is supported by state and county funds and involves a complete replacement of the bridge, along with drainage improvements and repaving of each roadway approach.
Commissioner Al Dyer, who serves as liaison to the Department of Public Works, emphasized the project's significance: “This project is incredibly important to maintain safety on our roadways and to ensure the strength and longevity of our county’s infrastructure.” He added that residents have been concerned about this issue for some time, expressing enthusiasm about enhancing safety for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians.
The bridge is situated approximately 1,300 feet northwest of Chews Landing Road and spans the north branch of Timber Creek in Gloucester Township. During construction, which is expected to last two years, contractors are required to keep two lanes open for traffic.
Dyer assured that traffic flow would be maintained: “Luckily, during construction, traffic will still be able to move through the area,” he said. Although minor delays may occur, major disruptions are not anticipated.
The Camden County Department of Public Works oversees more than 1,200 miles of county roads and 50 bridges. They focus on improving safety for both motorists and pedestrians through various projects including highway construction and regular maintenance such as pothole repairs and storm drainage upkeep. The department operates from Lindenwold with personnel available around the clock.
