On March 10, the Sherwin Williams Company will commence a significant sewer project in Gibbsboro. The work will be carried out in five phases, with the first phase resulting in the closure of United States Avenue to Foster Avenue from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, for five weeks. The entire project is expected to take six months and involves installing a gravity line, force mains, constructing a pump station, and connecting homes to the system.

This initiative is part of an ongoing revitalization effort at the former Sherwin Williams factory site near Silver Lake. The company operated a paint manufacturing facility there from the mid-1800s until 1977. Over time, direct waste discharge into Hilliards Creek contributed to widespread contamination of soil, sediment, surface water, and groundwater as noted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

“This environmental remediation effort and infrastructure investment has been ongoing for several years and is focused on correcting more than a century of degradation and pollution,” stated Commissioner Al Dyer, liaison to the Department of Public Works. “This next phase will aid in the overall revitalization of Silver Lake and the community to create a healthier and brighter future for this area. This will also take more homes in the borough off of septic systems and into the county’s modern sewer system improving water quality for residents.”
