Legislation aimed at assisting veterans in returning to higher education has been signed into law. Sponsored by Senator Kristin M. Corrado, the bill mandates that public universities in New Jersey readmit undergraduate students who left their studies due to military service without altering their academic standing.

"Every veteran in the state deserves the opportunity to pursue their higher education goals," stated Senator Corrado. "With the Governor’s signature, we will make certain that public colleges and universities have policies in place to provide special accommodations for veterans, and help our brave men and women in uniform transition back into civilian life more easily than ever before."

The legislation, known as S-1445, requires New Jersey's public colleges and universities to allow readmission of undergraduate students who withdrew because of military commitments. This applies to those serving in the Armed Forces, National Guard, or Reserve on active duty or training under federal or state authority.

The bill stipulates that readmission must be granted with the same academic status as before withdrawal. Additionally, requests for readmission must be submitted in writing without any associated application or other fees.
