Legislation sponsored by Senator Vince Polistina (R-2) that would permit a member of the State Police and Firemen Retirement System (PFRS) to purchase pension credit as a class two special law enforcement officer in New Jersey was approved by the Senate State Government, Wagering, Tourism & Historic Preservation Committee.

“Class II Special Law Enforcement Officers put their lives on the line every day to protect our communities,” said Polistina. “With similar duties to that of full-time police officers, we have an obligation to provide a pension credit purchase option to these brave men and women who have served our great State.”

Under current law, a PFRS member may purchase credit for public employment with other states or the U.S. Government or for military service in the U.S. Armed Forces. A member may purchase up to 10 years of out-of-State service plus an additional five years of war service.

Senator Polistina’s bill, S-2070, would expand the PFRS credit purchase option of up to 10 years of service to members who served as class two special law enforcement officers with a public employer in New Jersey prior to becoming a PFRS member.

“Expanding access for PFRS credits to Class II Special Law Enforcement Officers is a small but important way to honor the service of New Jersey’s men and women in blue,” Polistina continued.
