Senator Doug Steinhardt of New Jersey has announced plans to introduce a bill aimed at enhancing cooperation between state and federal authorities in managing immigration issues. The proposed legislation mandates that New Jersey law enforcement agencies notify federal immigration officials within 24 hours if they arrest an individual for certain crimes, provided the person is suspected of being in the United States illegally.

Steinhardt emphasized the importance of collaboration between state and federal bodies to enforce laws effectively. "We cannot ignore the need for cooperation between state and federal authorities to ensure the efficient and economic enforcement of our laws,” he stated. “This bill seeks to do that, to safeguard the general public, protect those who are here legally or seeking legal asylum, and ensure that individuals who are here illegally and commit crimes are held accountable.”

The proposal comes amid opposition from Governor Murphy and Attorney General Platkin, who have expressed resistance to actions by President Trump perceived as infringing on the rights of New Jersey residents. Steinhardt's initiative challenges this stance by advocating for active participation from New Jersey law enforcement in supporting federal immigration efforts, particularly concerning criminal activities.

"The safety of New Jersey residents must always come first," Steinhardt asserted. He further explained that under his bill, state law enforcement would collaborate with federal authorities to address illegal immigration issues, ensuring that offenders face consequences irrespective of their immigration status.

This legislation targets New Jersey’s existing “Sanctuary State” policies by requiring state law enforcement to cooperate with federal agencies for prompt information exchange about individuals suspected of illegal presence in the country.
