Senator Carmen Amato, Jr., Assemblyman Brian Rumpf, and Assemblyman Gregory Myhre have urged the Board of Public Utilities (BPU) to reject a proposed 8% electricity rate increase by Atlantic City Electric. The legislators addressed their concerns in a letter to BPU President Christine Guhl-Sadovy.
"Already, too many ratepayers cannot afford to pay their electric bills. An 8% rate increase will only push more ratepayers to their financial limits while disproportionately impacting those living on fixed or retirement incomes struggling to remain in their current housing," stated the Delegation.
Atlantic City Electric has filed for approval of this rate increase with the BPU, which would raise residential customers' bills by approximately $12.96 per month.
The letter highlights that Atlantic City Electric customers in the legislative district have already faced significant financial challenges due to previous rate hikes. The legislators expressed concern over the impact on seniors and working families who are already experiencing financial hardships.
"In no uncertain terms, our Delegation is calling on the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities to outright reject the 8% rate increase sought by Atlantic City Electric," they wrote.
