TRENTON, N.J. – Even after more than 20 years as an Assemblyman, Brian Rumpf finds himself as one of the newest members of the Assembly Military and Veterans’ Affairs Committee.
"I’m reminded of a letter Abraham Lincoln wrote to New York City Mayor George Opdyke in 1862: ‘Honor to the Soldier, and Sailor everywhere, who bravely bears his country’s cause. Honor also to the citizen who cares for his brother in the field, and serves, as he best can, the same cause,'" Rumpf said. “I’d like to believe that’s my guiding principle when considering legislation as a member of this committee.”
Rumpf, representing Ocean County, emphasized the significance of supporting veterans in New Jersey. He sponsored four bills aimed at aiding and protecting veterans and their families, including legislation focused on housing affordability assistance and exemptions for veterans' organizations.
“New Jersey is a wonderful place to call home, yet it can be beyond the reach of our veterans, many of whom are senior citizens who want to remain close to family,” Rumpf expressed. “At the same time, veterans’ organizations are supported by those service members who may have a difficult time making ends meet. Those burdens can be eased with my legislation.”
Rumpf's legislative efforts also include advocating for veteran’s gross income tax exemptions to be extended to the spouses of deceased veterans and pushing for increased penalties for identity theft when the victim is a senior citizen or veteran.
“It does us well to remember that military spouses have also made sacrifices, and should be cared for even after the passing of their husband or wife,” Rumpf added.
