In light of a recent report revealing a 24% increase in New Jersey's homeless population from 2023 to 2024, Senate Republican Leader Anthony M. Bucco has called for unified efforts from local, state, and federal leaders to tackle the state's homelessness crisis. This rise has been attributed to various factors including being asked to leave shared residences, job income reduction or loss, and eviction risks.
Senator Bucco emphasized that "homelessness is a human issue that transcends our political environment," noting the unacceptable increase in numbers. He expressed confidence in existing tools to create a comprehensive plan but warned against letting egos obstruct progress.
A NJ.com article reported that New Jersey's homeless population exceeded 12,000 this year, with children comprising over one-fifth of this figure. Bucco highlighted his previous support for the Interagency Council on Homelessness but acknowledged its insufficiency given the current situation.
"I was proud to vote yes on establishing the Interagency Council on Homelessness but clearly that is not enough," said Bucco. He urged leaders not to point fingers but rather engage in open dialogue involving all stakeholders, from those experiencing homelessness to state agencies responsible for prevention.
Morris County experienced a significant rise in its homeless population by 45.9%, increasing from 466 individuals in 2023 to 680 in 2024. This followed a prior increase of 32.8% from the previous year.
Senator Bucco has actively championed measures supporting those facing homelessness and affordability issues through several legislative initiatives:
- S825: Exempts persons with disabilities and persons who are homeless from payment of identification card fees.
- S889: Establishes grant program for homeless veterans shelters.
- S2573: Directs DCA to end veteran homelessness within three years.
- SCR84: Urges U.S. Secretary for Housing and Urban Development to prioritize transitional housing for homeless individuals and families, including survivors of domestic violence.
