Senate Republican Budget Officer Declan O’Scanlon has urged Governor Murphy to clarify the proposed new tax on 'digital services' in New Jersey. The tax, which could affect cell phone and computer users, may also increase business costs in the state.

A memo from the nonpartisan Office of Legislative Services to Senator O’Scanlon suggests that the tax might apply to cloud software services, emerging AI technologies, and various other commonly used services.

"Either the Governor thinks that New Jerseyans are too dumb to understand or too busy to care but the fact remains that he continues to find ways to exacerbate our already terrible affordability crisis with these regressive taxes that only hurt hardworking New Jerseyans trying to make ends meet," stated Sen. O’Scanlon. He further added, "Non-partisan experts are raising red flags that this new tax could impact everyone with a phone or a computer and impact our businesses community—Governor, it’s time you explain this tax."
