Commissioner Jonathan Young of the Camden County Department of Public Safety has announced a Code Blue Advisory for the region. The advisory will be in effect from 7 p.m. on Saturday, February 1 to 7 a.m. on Sunday, February 2. The emergency hotline number for after-hours assistance is 2-1-1.
"The temperature is set to drop dangerously low for an extended period, so it is critical that everyone is inside and away from the elements," said Young. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that elderly residents and those with disabilities have adequate heating and that pets are brought indoors.
The advisory calls on municipalities with homeless populations or transient individuals to activate their Code Blue response plans. "If you know of anyone who is elderly or disabled, please check on them to make sure they’re prepared to stay safe in these dangerous temperatures," Young advised.
Young also provided tips for pet safety during cold weather, urging pet owners to keep animals indoors when temperatures fall below freezing and to provide warm shelter if pets must remain outside. He cautioned against leaving pets in unheated vehicles and stressed the importance of clean drinking water free from harmful chemicals like antifreeze.
The Camden County Health Department and Office of Emergency Management have coordinated with municipalities to ensure resources are available for severe weather situations as part of individual Code Blue plans. Those seeking shelter should contact their local municipality.
In case of power outages, residents are advised to report issues directly to their utility providers: PSE&G at 1-800-436-PSEG (7734), Atlantic City Electric at 1-800-833-7476, and South Jersey Gas at 1-800-582-7060.
