Governor Phil Murphy has signed a bipartisan bill into law that reschedules New Jersey's 2025 primary election. The legislation, sponsored by Senator Robert Singer (R-30), moves the date from June 3 to June 10 to accommodate the Jewish holiday of Shavuot.

"As legislators, it is our responsibility to ensure every eligible voter can participate in our democracy without undue barriers," said Sen. Singer. "By rescheduling New Jersey’s June primary to occur on June 10, we are accommodating voters observing Shavuot and honoring the rich diversity of our State. With the Governor’s signature, this change ensures that voters are not forced to choose between exercising their right to vote and their deeply held religious traditions."

Shavuot is a significant Jewish holiday lasting three days from June 1 through June 3. During this period, observant individuals refrain from activities such as writing, driving, traveling, and using electronics. This would have posed challenges for observant Jewish voters participating in the originally scheduled June 3 primary.

The bipartisan bill A-5152/S-3965 was introduced by Sen. Singer to address these concerns by moving the primary election date to ensure inclusivity for all voters during religious observances.
