Senator Carmen Amato, Jr., Assemblyman Brian Rumpf, and Assemblyman Gregory Myhre have urged Governor Phil Murphy to veto the New Jersey Turnpike Authority's decision to implement another toll increase. The lawmakers argue that such a move would exacerbate the state's affordability crisis.
"Permitting the toll increase to go into effect would only validate the view many residents hold that Trenton is worsening New Jersey’s affordability crisis at a time when elected officials should be doing the exact opposite – reducing the state’s crushing tax burden," stated the delegation in their letter.
The letter addressed to Governor Murphy emphasizes the financial strain on constituents, particularly seniors on fixed incomes. The legislators noted that rising costs in various sectors, including groceries and insurance, make it difficult for residents to afford additional toll expenses alongside property taxes.
The delegation highlighted concerns about potential increases in goods' prices as businesses face higher transportation costs due to toll hikes. They also pointed out that their legislative district could be disproportionately affected because of its reliance on the Garden State Parkway and limited NJ Transit services.
Residents are questioning why road maintenance cannot be funded from the $50 billion state budget instead of imposing another toll increase for a fourth consecutive year. The lawmakers reiterated their call for Governor Murphy's administration to veto this decision, which they believe their constituents cannot afford.
