Legislation aimed at funding flood prevention efforts along the Peckman River has progressed through the New Jersey Senate Environment and Energy Committee. The bill, sponsored by Senator Kristin Corrado, seeks to provide financial support to municipalities in Essex and Passaic Counties, including Cedar Grove, Little Falls, Verona, and Woodland Park. These areas have faced severe flooding due to recent storms.

Senator Corrado emphasized the impact of flash flooding on local communities: “For years, our communities across the state have been devastated by flash flooding, forcing families out of their homes with nowhere to go.” She added that the proposed funding would help secure traditionally vulnerable areas and allow residents to remain safely in their homes.

The legislation, known as S-2898, proposes allocating funds to the Department of Environmental Protection for dredging and restoring the Peckman River. Assembly members Al Barlas and Christopher DePhillips are sponsoring a companion bill in the Assembly under A-3927.

Both bills can be accessed online for those interested in reading their full text.
