The Senate Transportation Committee has approved a bill introduced by Senator Latham Tiver (R-08) that allows holders of disabled veteran or Purple Heart license plates or placards to park in spots designated for persons with disabilities.
"Making this change to allow disabled veterans and Purple Heart recipients to park in spots reserved for people with a disability is one small way we can show our appreciation to those who have had their life severely altered defending our freedoms," said Sen. Tiver. "These disabled veterans already meet the qualifications to park in handicapped spots and would be able skip the extra red tape of going to their local MVC, under this bill."
The bill, S2815, stipulates that individuals issued a disabled veteran or Purple Heart license plate or placard are recognized as persons with disabilities by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission.
Additionally, the bill specifies that any person who is a disabled veteran or recipient of the Purple Heart may use parking spaces and zones restricted for persons with disabilities, provided they display their unexpired disabled veteran or Purple Heart license plate or placard while parked.
