Senator Vince Polistina introduced two bills aimed at assisting those in recovery from addiction.

“From speaking to, and working with those who specialize in addiction and recovery, it is clear that as time progresses, there have been increases in temptations and ease of access,” said Senator Polistina. “This pair of bills will allow for individuals who recognize that, and recognize their own struggles, to take the proactive step to self-regulate. It is our responsibility as members of the Legislature, to do what we can to ensure their continued progress.”

The two bills, S3682 and S3655, are part of Sen. Polistina’s commitment to assist those in recovery who feel they are unable to handle the addictive nature of gambling or marijuana use.

S3655 authorizes the Division of Gaming Enforcement to participate in a national self-exclusion list for gaming activities and create necessary forms for participation.

S3682 requires the Cannabis Regulatory Commission to establish a procedure for persons to voluntarily prohibit themselves from entering a dispensary.

Speaking of S3682, Robert Zlotnick, Ph.D., an addiction and recovery specialist and resident of Atlantic County explained, “Currently, anyone 21 or older, with proper ID, can enter a NJ cannabis shop. If this bill were enacted, NJ residents could voluntarily 'opt-out' of being able to enter one of these shops. Persons in recovery from a substance use disorder, especially those just starting their recovery journey might want to self-exclude themselves to reduce any temptation. Similar to the casino self-exclusion list people would have a choice on how long they want to be on the list. This measure would also allow people to easily opt-out of mailings texts and e-mail promotions.”
