On Monday, Sept. 9, PSE&G will commence a significant gas main project in the Liberty Park neighborhood of Camden. The initiative involves replacing aging gas mains and will be executed in phases along South 9th Street, Mechanic Street, Mt. Ephraim Avenue, South 10th Street, and Ferry Avenue. Work hours are scheduled from Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with weekly updates on detours and road closures.

“This is a very large and extensive project but one that is necessary and will benefit our community in the long run,” said Commissioner Al Dyer, liaison to the Camden County Department of Public Works. “The county is working with PSE&G to keep our residents informed about the work and what to expect. While this project will cause some disruptions, it must be done to ensure that the power system in this area remains safe and reliable.”

PSE&G has provided detailed information about the project:

To upgrade the gas lines, trenches will be dug primarily in road surfaces, laying new pipes block-by-block to minimize disruptions. At the end of each workday, trenches will be filled in and protective plates secured.

Efforts will be made to avoid digging on properties; however, if necessary, PSE&G or its contractors will restore any disturbances after installing service lines. Grass areas will be repaired and seeded while concrete or asphalt openings are patched until final restoration.

After construction, a PSE&G technician will need access to homes to connect service lines and gas meters to the new gas main. Homeowners will be contacted to arrange appointments for this work. On appointment days, technicians will ask pandemic-related safety questions.

During reconnection procedures, households can expect a four-hour interruption in gas service. If meters are inside homes or businesses, they will be moved outside during this process. Technicians will reconnect and relight all appliances.

If legal access cannot be provided without landlord approval, homeowners should inform PSE&G when contacted for appointments. Technicians wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) will maintain physical distancing throughout visits.

Upon completion of work each day, roads are temporarily paved until the entire project concludes and ground settles—a process generally taking 45 to 90 days but potentially longer depending on weather conditions or other factors. Permanent paving follows town/county ordinances.

Residents with serious medical conditions that may worsen due to interruptions in gas service should contact PSE&G immediately at 1-800-436-7734 (PSEG).
