More than two years ago, Governor Phil Murphy pledged over $250 million to fully renovate and revise the Walter Rand Transportation Center (WRTC) in Camden City. Since then, the Camden County Commissioners have been collaborating with NJ Transit, the site's redeveloper and owner, to create a modern transportation hub. Currently, NJ Transit has completed 30% of the project's design, and renderings of the envisioned space have been made public. The latest state budget allocation secured by Majority Leader Louis Greenwald will assist the Camden County Improvement Authority in working with Gilbane to continue reengineering and rebuilding this vital community asset.

“The reconstruction of Walter Rand will be a generational investment not only into Camden City but into South Jersey,” Nash said. “This allocation from the state will be extremely helpful for the county and other stakeholders in this process to ensure we have not only a busy transit hub but a genuine sense of place on the expanded footprint that our community can be proud of when they utilize it.”

Assembly Majority Leader Louis Greenwald discussed how the investment into WRTC would benefit both the transit hub and its surrounding neighborhoods and anchor institutions.

“With this funding, the Walter Rand Transportation Center is poised to transform into the heart of South Jersey’s transit network,” Greenwald said. “This revitalization effort not only enhances its role as the region’s major transportation hub but also revitalizes the surrounding community, ensuring that the center becomes a state-of-the-art gateway connecting Camden and beyond.”
