The New Jersey Senate has approved bipartisan legislation sponsored by Senator Robert Singer (R-30) that mandates criminal background checks for individuals seeking licensure from certain boards regulating health care professions.
"The Senate’s approval of this legislation is a proactive step toward ensuring that those entrusted with the health and well-being of our communities are qualified and trustworthy," said Sen. Singer. "By extending background check requirements to include more health care professions, we are not only protecting patients but also enhancing the overall integrity of New Jersey's health care system."
Currently, individuals licensed by the State Board of Medical Examiners, the New Jersey Board of Nursing, the New Jersey State Board of Dentistry, and several other boards are required to undergo a background check.
Senator Singer's bill, S-2311, seeks to expand this requirement to include individuals licensed by the State Board of Applied Behavior Analyst Examiners, The State Board of Creative Arts and Activities Therapies, and the State Board of Dietetics and Nutrition. These professionals would need to undergo a background check to receive or renew their licenses.
Under the bill, the relevant board or the Division of Consumer Affairs may revoke or refuse to renew a license if an individual possesses a criminal record.
