Commissioners and Mayor Celebrate Completion of $10 Million Reconstruction Project of 27th Street

Commissioner Al Dyer expressed gratitude to the community partners for their patience and collaboration during the $10 million reconstruction project on 27th Street, stating, “This was a huge undertaking but a necessary one.”

Camden Mayor Victor Carstarphen highlighted the significance of the project, stating, “It is a celebration of real tangible progress for the East Camden community.”

Assemblyman Bill Moen praised the project as a vital improvement for the City of Camden and its residents, emphasizing the safety enhancements for vehicles and pedestrians.

New Jersey Department of Transportation’s Acting Commissioner Francis O’Connor commended the partnership with Camden County on impactful transportation initiatives like the reconstruction of 27th Street.

Former NFL player and Heisman Trophy winner Mike Rozier expressed gratitude to the community and school system for their support and influence on his successful football career, stating, “My family grew up on this street, me and my five brothers were always out playing some kind of game in around 27th Street.”

Katrina McCombs, superintendent of the Camden City School District, discussed the significance of dedicating 27th Street to Mike Rozier, stating, “His journey from the fields of Eastside High and beyond embodies the spirit of resilience, hard work, and commitment that we strive to instill in all our students.”

City Council President Angel Fuentes shared his excitement over the completion of the project, expressing, “So many residents along the street take great pride in their property, but the old roadway conditions were awful.”

The $10 million reconstruction project on 27th Street in Camden, New Jersey, was recently completed, with a dedication to native and football legend Mike Rozier. The project, which aimed to improve safety and mobility for vehicles and pedestrians, was celebrated by Commissioners, the Mayor, elected officials, and the Camden community.

The reconstruction of 27th Street from Marlton to Federal streets and Baird Boulevard was completed in four phases, with upgrades to curbing, sidewalks, traffic signals, and ADA accessibility. The project received financial support from the New Jersey Infrastructure Bank and the state Department of Transportation.

The dedication of 27th Street to Mike Rozier, a former NFL player and Heisman Trophy winner, holds special significance for the community. Rozier expressed his gratitude for the support he received from the community and school system, emphasizing the role they played in his successful career.

Superintendent Katrina McCombs highlighted the importance of honoring Rozier as a former student who has achieved great success, while City Council President Angel Fuentes shared the excitement of residents over the project's completion and the improved road surface in East Camden.
