The Camden County Office of Emergency Management has issued a Code Blue Advisory effective from 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8, to 7 a.m. on Wednesday, April 9. Commissioner Jonathan Young, who is the liaison to the Camden County Department of Public Safety, has issued critical advisories due to the upcoming hazardous weather conditions.
"The temperature is set to drop dangerously low, so it is critical that everyone is inside and away from the elements," Young said. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that heating systems are functional, especially for elderly and disabled residents, and reminded pet owners to bring animals indoors.
In response to the advisory, municipalities with homeless, situational homeless, or transient populations are expected to activate their Code Blue plans to provide necessary shelter and resources. Young also urged residents to look out for elderly or disabled neighbors: "If you know of anyone who is elderly or disabled, please check on them to make sure they’re prepared to stay safe in these dangerous temperatures."
Young provided several tips to ensure pet safety during the cold spell. He advised pet owners to keep pets indoors as much as possible when the temperature drops below 32 degrees. For pets that are outside for extended periods, signs of cold distress should be monitored, including shivering. He also cautioned against leaving pets in unheated vehicles and advised ensuring pets have access to clean, unfrozen water.
Municipalities have coordinated with the Camden County Health Department and the Office of Emergency Management to prepare for severe weather, ensuring resources and warm shelters are available. Residents seeking shelter should contact local municipalities. Information on reporting power outages to utility providers is also available for residents facing power issues during the cold weather.
