Senator Declan O'Scanlon has expressed strong criticism of the Newark school board's recent decision to require potential speakers at public meetings to sign up online five days in advance and provide a detailed description of their intended topics.
O'Scanlon stated, "These people are outrageous and out of control. The Newark school board's rules limiting public comment are as draconian as they are outrageous." He further commented that these measures undermine the public's right to participate in educational decisions affecting their children, calling them an attack on transparency and democracy.
The senator also criticized past actions by Newark school officials, highlighting their approval of taxpayer-funded trips for board members to destinations such as San Diego, Miami, Puerto Rico, and Honolulu. O'Scanlon noted that the travel budget increased from $600,000 to $1 million this year.
In June 2024, O'Scanlon criticized Newark Public Schools for spending over $50,000 on a "Superintendent's Staff Fun Day," while some buildings lacked air conditioning. He remarked that approximately 90% of the district's budget comes from state funds, emphasizing that New Jersey taxpayers' money is being misused.
"The Newark school board is out of control," O'Scanlon concluded. He called for withholding aid payments until the policy limiting public participation is reversed, insisting that the community deserves a voice.
