Bipartisan legislation introduced by Senator Carmen Amato Jr. and Senator Vin Gopal has successfully passed the Senate Higher Education Committee. The bill, identified as S-2385, proposes an increase in the tuition credit available under the volunteer tuition credit program. This increase raises the amount from $2,400 to $5,000 over a four-year period for volunteer first responders and extends this benefit to their spouses and children.

Senator Amato commented on the bill's significance: “This bill recognizes the selflessness of volunteer first responders by helping them and their families pursue education without the financial strain. It’s a way to invest in the future, as thanks for all they do for our communities.”

To qualify for this tuition credit at county colleges, vocational schools, and technical institutes, eligible first responders must have completed a minimum of four years of service.
