The New Jersey State Board of Agriculture has recognized four individuals for their contributions to agriculture in the state. During the 110th New Jersey State Agricultural Convention, Distinguished Service to Agriculture Citations were awarded to former New Jersey Department of Agriculture Secretary Douglas Fisher, farmers Richard and Rosina Byma, and posthumously to John Rigolizzo Jr.
NJDA Secretary Edward Wengryn stated, "The dedication and service that each of these individuals have given to New Jersey agriculture make their recognition well deserved." He highlighted their efforts in educating and advancing the agricultural industry as a foundation for its future in New Jersey.
Douglas Fisher served as the seventh New Jersey Secretary of Agriculture from 2009 until his retirement in July 2023. His appointment was approved by Governor Jon S. Corzine in 2009, with continued support from Governors Chris Christie and Philip Murphy. Fisher's career includes roles such as treasurer of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture and president positions at Food Export-Northeast and the Northeast Association of State Departments of Agriculture. His legislative work included sponsoring a law banning horseshoe crab harvesting to protect migratory shorebirds.
Richard and Rosina Byma have been dairy farmers in Sussex County for over five decades, managing more than 600 acres. They are known for public education on dairy farming through farm tours and active participation in events like the New Jersey State Fair. The Bymas' involvement extends to organizing educational exhibits at fairs and promoting agriculture through various community events.
John Rigolizzo Jr., honored posthumously, was a fifth-generation farmer from Camden County who contributed significantly to local, state, national, and international agricultural communities. He held leadership roles in several organizations including the New Jersey Farm Bureau and Vegetable Growers Association of New Jersey. Rigolizzo received numerous awards recognizing his service to agriculture.
Organizations eligible to send delegates to the convention can nominate farmers for this award. More information is available on the NJDA website.
