The Camden County Department of Public Works (DPW) is preparing for impending winter weather expected to hit the region on Thursday morning. Crews are set to manage the county's 1,200 lane miles of roads as conditions deteriorate. They will be stationed throughout the county from early Thursday.
Commissioner Al Dyer, who serves as a liaison to the DPW, stated, "It is looking like the morning commute could be impacted due to rain, sleet and ice but the Public Works Department is treating the roads ahead of time to ensure motorists are as safe as possible." He emphasized that crews are ready with salt trucks loaded and plows prepared.
The forecast predicts a light wintry mix beginning after midnight, transitioning into pockets of sleet and freezing rain by dawn. Temperatures will gradually rise, leading to steadier rain through mid-morning before tapering off around midday.
Dyer advised residents to consider delaying their commutes if possible: "We are urging residents to take it slow in the morning, even delay your commute if possible, to allow the weather to pass through." He also reminded drivers about safety precautions around road treatment vehicles.
At their Lindenwold complex, more than 100 pieces of equipment stand ready for deployment across Camden County's 12 winter maintenance districts. The response plan allows for targeted dispatch based on need.
In case of power outages caused by adverse weather conditions, residents should contact their utility companies directly. PSE&G can be reached at 1-800-436-PSEG (7734), Atlantic City Electric at 1-800-833-7476, and South Jersey Gas at 1-800-582-7060.
For emergencies only, residents should use 911. Road issues can be reported via CCDPW’s 24-hour hotline at (856) 566-2980. Updates on weather and road conditions will be available on www.camdencounty.com and social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.
