Senator Carmen Amato, Jr., Assemblyman Brian Rumpf, and Assemblyman Gregory Myhre have put forward legislation to honor Robert "Bob" Popovics by designating June 1 as "Robert 'Bob' Popovics Day" in New Jersey. The proposed bills, SJR-146 and AJR-209, aim to commemorate the life and contributions of Popovics, a respected Marine veteran and influential figure in the fishing community.

The 9th District Delegation expressed their intentions behind this legislative move: “Bob was a respected Marine veteran, legendary fisherman, owner of the Shady Rest Restaurant in Bayville, and loving family man. His tragic death shocked the community with many still mourning his loss. In representing the interests of our constituents, we introduced legislation to designate June 1 as Robert ‘Bob’ Popovics Day’ to not only honor Bob’s memory but to promote his remarkable qualities which earned him the respect of so many.”

Popovics was born in Trenton and lived for many years in Seaside Park. He passed away on November 1, 2024, at age 75 due to injuries from an accident. Throughout his life, he made significant contributions both locally and nationally. He served with distinction in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War.

In addition to his military service, Popovics operated the Shady Rest restaurant alongside his wife after taking over from his parents. His influence extended into the fishing world where he was known as an avid fly fisherman and master fly tyer. As founder and CEO of Pop Fleyes—a custom fly tying company—his innovative designs were highly regarded within fishing circles.

The resolution highlights these achievements: “To recognize Bob’s numerous contributions to the New Jersey community in which he lived, the fishing community, and the United States it is altogether fitting and proper to designate June 1 of each year as ‘Robert ‘Bob’ Popovics Day’ in New Jersey.”

Currently awaiting consideration are SJR-146 by the Senate State Government Committee on Wagering Tourism & Historic Preservation while AJR-209 awaits review by Assembly State Local Government Committee.
