The New Jersey Senate has unanimously approved a bill aimed at broadening access to hearing aids. The legislation, sponsored by Senator Vince Polistina, is known as S-2874. It seeks to allow licensed audiologists the authority to prescribe and order hearing aids under specific conditions.
"This bill is a common-sense update to ensure that audiologists can provide more comprehensive care for individuals with hearing loss," stated Senator Polistina. "As the FDA modernizes hearing aid regulations, it’s crucial that our state’s healthcare professionals have the authority to keep up. This legislation will ultimately streamline access to hearing aids and improve the quality of care for New Jersey residents."
Currently, licensed audiologists are allowed to dispense and fit hearing aids if they have completed an accredited program. The new bill would modify state law to enable those who have finished the necessary coursework to also select, prescribe, and order these devices.
The complete text of the bill is available online and it now awaits the Governor's signature.
