On January 13, a significant infrastructure project will commence in Gloucester Township with the reconstruction of the Somerdale Road Bridge. The $3.7 million endeavor is financed by state and county funds and involves replacing the bridge, improving drainage, and repaving road approaches.

Commissioner Al Dyer, who serves as liaison to the Department of Public Works, emphasized the project's importance: “This project is incredibly important to maintain safety on our roadways and to ensure the strength and longevity of our county’s infrastructure.” He acknowledged residents' concerns about the bridge's condition and expressed enthusiasm for enhancing safety for all users: “We know this has been a project of concern for many residents, so we are thrilled to get to work and make this area safer for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.”

The bridge is situated approximately 1,300 feet northwest of Chews Landing Road over Timber Creek's north branch. During construction, which is expected to last two years, two lanes of traffic will remain open. Dyer noted that while there might be minor delays, major disruptions are not anticipated: “Luckily, during construction, traffic will still be able to move through the area,” he said.

The Camden County Department of Public Works oversees more than 1,200 miles of roads and 50 bridges. Their mission includes enhancing safety through highway projects and maintenance tasks such as pothole repairs and storm drainage upkeep. The department operates out of Lindenwold with personnel available around-the-clock.
