Senate Republican Leader Anthony M. Bucco expressed concerns over the recent report from the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs regarding municipal development obligations. In his statement, Sen. Bucco emphasized that "today’s DCA report proved what Republicans have been saying for years—these obligations are unrealistic, impractical, and unaffordable."
Bucco criticized the current approach to housing in New Jersey, stating that efforts for a bipartisan solution have been ignored by Democrats. He remarked, "We have consistently pushed for a bipartisan approach to achieve safe, attainable housing across New Jersey but unfortunately Democrats and their one-party rule are ignoring the very real concerns of those who would be most impacted."
The senator warned about potential negative impacts on communities if the plan is implemented. He said, "If implemented, this plan will destroy our beautiful open spaces and forever change the character of our communities, giving a clear advantage to developers who are creating harmfully high densities that cannot be supported by our municipalities." Bucco affirmed his commitment to advocating for his constituents against these developments.
In March 2023, Bucco had called for a delay in the fourth round of housing obligations. He reiterated his stance earlier this year by urging a bipartisan approach to address New Jersey's housing crisis through a letter sent to Senate President Scutari and Community and Urban Affairs Committee Chairman Singleton.
