A bill proposed by Senator Latham Tiver (R-08) aimed at increasing road safety in New Jersey has successfully passed the Senate Transportation Committee. The legislation mandates an annual public awareness campaign to be conducted by the New Jersey Department of Transportation to inform residents about new move-over laws.

“Anyone who has ever rode a bicycle or had to change a tire or alongside motor vehicles on a busy road understands that sharing this space isn’t just a courtesy, it could be a life or death situation,” said Sen. Tiver. “By instituting this public awareness campaign of New Jersey’s updated move-over laws, we’re making our roads safer for everyone by educating drivers on best practices when faced with these potentially fatal, but easily avoidable situations.”

Bill S-3501 stipulates that the Commissioner of Transportation and the Director of the Division of Highway Traffic Safety must annually update and disseminate public awareness programs. These initiatives will inform motorists about their responsibilities when approaching certain vehicles and emphasize the importance of adhering to these rules.

Additionally, the bill requires the commissioner to use variable message signs at least once per year to remind drivers of their duties when encountering specific vehicles and stress why these actions are necessary.

For further details on the bill, interested parties can access it online.
