Senate Republican Leader Anthony M. Bucco (R-25) released a statement criticizing Democrats for recent changes to property tax regulations in New Jersey. According to Bucco, these changes will worsen the state's affordability crisis.

“The actions by Trenton Democrats and their propensity to raise taxes, fees, and fares is troubling. Especially when you combine that with their recent decision to allow school boards to raise property taxes up to 10% to cover the Governor’s recent cuts to school funding,” Bucco said. “This does nothing but exacerbate the affordability crisis that so many New Jerseyans are struggling with.”

Bucco noted that Republicans had worked hard to protect property tax rates by instituting a 2% property tax cap, which he believes helped control some of the highest property taxes in the nation. He argued that the new measures undermine this cap and add financial burdens for families, seniors, and hardworking individuals.

“While it’s easy to talk about making New Jersey more affordable, my colleagues across the aisle need to match their actions to their words instead of forging ahead with more band-aid policies that continue to hurt the hard-working middle class,” he added.

Bucco also highlighted that Republicans have proposed solutions aimed at cutting government waste, fully funding schools, lowering taxes, and improving overall living conditions in New Jersey. However, he expressed frustration that these efforts have been ignored.

Last week, Republican members of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee offered comprehensive changes to Governor Murphy's budget proposal in a letter addressed to Senate and Assembly leadership.
