Senator Michael Testa has announced the allocation of $100 million in Boardwalk Preservation Fund grants to assist South Jersey municipalities in preserving their boardwalks. Testa, the driving force behind the establishment of the fund, emphasized the economic importance of boardwalks, stating, “Anyone who lives near the shore knows that boardwalks are an economic driver for shore town communities and generate millions of dollars in revenue for the state.” The grants aim to help cities and counties maintain these crucial features of the Jersey Shore for future generations.
The Boardwalk Preservation Fund was created within the Department of Community Affairs through legislation sponsored by Testa, approved by the Senate on June 30, 2023, and signed into law in August of the same year. In a recent announcement on February 23, 2024, the state revealed the recipients of the grants, highlighting their significance in supporting the long-term economic success of the Jersey Shore and preserving the historical value of the boardwalks. Testa expressed his satisfaction with the grants, noting that they will enhance coastal infrastructure, improve tourist appeal, and create additional revenue streams for the state.
Among the municipalities set to benefit from the funding are six in Testa’s district, each receiving a specific amount for boardwalk maintenance:
- Cape May ($6.7M)
- North Wildwood ($10.3M)
- Ocean City ($4.9M)
- Sea Isle City ($2M)
- Wildwood ($8.3M)
- Wildwood Crest ($1.1M)
The allocation of these funds underscores the commitment to preserving the unique charm and economic vitality of the Jersey Shore boardwalks. For further inquiries, individuals can contact Jonathan Azzara in the SRO Communications department at [email protected] or by phone at (609) 847-3600.
