JERSEY CITY, D.C. U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) issued the following statement on the one year anniversary of the Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overturned 50 years of precedent set by Roe v. Wade on the right to seek abortion care:

“A year ago today, six far-right justices on the Supreme Court threw out decades of legal precedent — dismantling the legal freedoms enshrined in Roe v. Wade. In doing so, the majority in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decided to abdicate their oath to uphold the rule of law in favor of fanning the flames of extremist efforts to end women’s bodily autonomy and unravel the progress we have made as a society.

“Over the past year, the Dobbs decision has opened the flood gates to dangerous assaults on reproductive health care and other long-protected freedoms. In 24 states, Republican lawmakers have moved swiftly to pass abortion bans — in a third of the nation, abortion is now completely illegal, including in cases of rape, incest, and when the health of the mother is at risk. It is an unimaginable backslide empowered by the highest court in our land. As we confront these dark forces, we must recommit to stand in the breach and push back on politicians who want to insert themselves into women’s personal medical decisions. I refuse to accept a future in which American women have fewer rights than the generation before them, and I won’t relent until the rights that were once enshrined in Roe are codified into law.”
