WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-N.J.), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and Chair of the Subcommittee on Criminal Justice and Counterterrorism, issued the following statement in response to the Biden-Harris Administration’s release of a status update on actions taken under the Executive Order on Advancing Effective, Accountable Policing and Criminal Justice Practices to Enhance Public Trust and Public Safety (EO 14074), signed one year ago today:

“I’m encouraged by the progress that’s been made thanks to President Biden’s executive order to increase law enforcement accountability, raise standards for federal law enforcement agencies, and adopt and implement policing best practices. I worked closely with the Biden-Harris Administration to craft and advance this executive order and I’m proud that it has yielded positive results.

“The executive order, supported by those impacted by police violence, law enforcement groups representing our nation’s officers, and civil rights groups alike, was an important step forward, but it cannot remain the only step. As we mark three years since the tragic murder of George Floyd, it is imperative that Congress take decisive action to truly honor his memory and those of others whose lives have been tragically lost to this violence. Congressional action on legislation that raises the levels of transparency, accountability, and professionalism in American policing is still urgently needed. Passing such legislation will build trust in communities, improve policing, and ensure greater public safety for all.”
