Miss Benji

Affectionately called “Miss Benji” by pantry volunteers and clients, Millicent is a retired housekeeper who visits her local food pantry for help putting meals on the table. With her fixed income, she struggles to get by.

“This helps because there are some things that I don’t have, like fresh fruits and vegetables,” she said. At the pantry, she selects salad greens, oranges, eggs, and tomatoes to help her get through the week. Though she lives alone, getting enough food would be a challenge for Millicent if she couldn’t come to the pantry.

Every year on August 21, Senior Citizens Day recognizes the contributions of seniors like Millicent and raises awareness about the challenges they face.
