34th annual Candlelight Vigil

4

Burlington County Prosecutor's Office issued the following announcement.

The Prosecutor’s Office would like to thank everyone who came out last night to our 34th annual Candlelight Vigil, where we honored victims of violent crime and showed support for all of those who have been affected by violence.

It was a very powerful evening: spiritual songs were sung by Inter-faith Men of Praise, the names of those whose lives were lost to violence since last year’s vigil were read, and friends and family members spoke about their loved ones who are no longer with them.

Prosecutor Scott Coffina praised those who are waiting for cases to proceed to trial for their continued advocacy and involvement with the process, and their determination to hold the system accountable until justice has been served.

Their active involvement in cases has resulted time and again in the greatest opportunities for their constitutional rights to be exercised in court proceedings, he said.

“I believe it is more important than ever for you to be present in court, to remind our judges that you are here, that you have rights, and that you expect the court to respect them,” Prosecutor Coffina told the nearly 60 people gathered last night. “Believe me, your own advocacy works,” he said, citing a recent example where a trial judge navigated the court’s COVID restrictions to ensure a victim’s parents could observe a trial inside the courtroom.
