The Union County Board of County Commissioners announced on Apr. 22 that its seasonal recycling events will continue in May, offering residents several free opportunities to recycle items such as documents, metal appliances, and hazardous household materials.

These programs aim to help residents dispose of unwanted or potentially dangerous items while supporting sustainable waste management across the community. “This is a great opportunity for residents to discard old documents, metal appliances, and hazardous items while also contributing to keeping Union County safe and sustainable. I encourage everyone to take advantage of this free program,” said Union County Commissioner Chairman Joseph C. Bodek.

Free mobile paper shredding events are scheduled from March through October. In May, these events will be held on Saturday, May 9 at the New Providence Community Pool Parking Lot and Friday, May 15 at the Hillside Pool Parking Lot. Both run from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., or until trucks reach capacity. Only personal and sensitive documents are accepted; magazines and junk mail should be recycled through municipal programs.

The Scrap Metal Recycling Program continues with collection dates on Thursday, May 7 and Saturday, May 16 from 9:00 a.m. until noon at two locations: Cranford’s Emergency Services Building and Rahway River Park’s service yard.

Additionally, a Household Hazardous Waste event is set for Sunday, June 7 at UCNJ in Cranford where residents can bring chemicals like oil-based finishes or pool chemicals for proper disposal but not latex paint or medical sharps.

All recycling events are contact-free with drive-up procedures in place. Residents can find more information about acceptable materials using the Recycle Coach mobile app or by visiting ucnj.org/recycle/.
