On Friday, the Board of Commissioners, in conjunction with the Trust for Public Land and Subaru, organized a tree planting event at Elijah Perry Park in Camden. This event marked the launch of the Trust for Public Land’s We Grow Camden initiative. The initiative is a joint effort focused on increasing the number of trees in the city, mitigating urban heat, and fostering community engagement through nature.

Commissioner Jennifer Fleisher highlighted the challenges faced by Camden due to the scarcity of trees. She stated, “Many areas throughout the city of Camden are vulnerable to extreme heat due to the lack of trees. And with climate change prolonging and intensifying heat waves, this is an issue that is imperative to address. We are extremely grateful to the Trust for Public Land for seeing the value in planting trees throughout this city and addressing the needs of the Camden community.”

The We Grow Camden initiative plans to plant 3,000 trees over the next five years. These trees will be distributed across various public spaces, affordable housing areas, commercial zones, and community schoolyards.
