Sunny Mehta was introduced as the sixth general manager in New Jersey Devils history at a press conference on April 22. Mehta, who was named to the position last Thursday, said his main responsibility is to “put a winning team on the ice,” emphasizing his commitment to building a successful roster.

Mehta’s appointment comes after the departure of Tom Fitzgerald earlier this month. The organization began its search for a new leader, ultimately selecting Mehta due to his diverse background and experience in decision-making under risk. He previously served as assistant general manager for the Florida Panthers, contributing to their back-to-back Stanley Cup wins, and has also worked with several other National Hockey League teams.

At the press conference, Mehta highlighted his approach: “To me, putting a winning team on the ice… is about decision making. Taking in information of all different sorts, assessing risk and making decisions.” He explained that his career path—from professional poker player to derivatives trader and hockey executive—has prepared him for this role: “I have studied making decisions under the cloud of risk for the past 25 years.”

Mehta expressed optimism about the current Devils roster: “We have a lot of talented players, and I really, truly believe that these talented players are about to hit an inflection point and get over that hurdle.” He also addressed fans directly: “As many of you know, I have been you for 40 years. It’s really not an exaggeration when I tell you this is my dream job.”

Reflecting on analytics in hockey management, Mehta said he does not see himself solely as an ‘analytics guy.’ Instead, he believes analytics are just one part of decision-making: “Yes, data does undoubtedly give a huge advantage in hockey… But you have to understand all those same things. The character. The locker room. The culture. The intangibles.”

Looking ahead, Mehta stated his goal is both immediate success and long-term sustainability: “I absolutely think we have pieces. We have the framework to win right away. But I also very much care about the long term.” He concluded by outlining his vision for leadership: “My goal for this front office is quite simple… I want to make smart, objective and educated decisions.”
