The Senate Transportation Committee has voted in favor of a bill sponsored by Senator Carmen Amato, Jr. This legislation aims to support individuals with disabilities during their driver education by allowing parents or guardians to accompany them and the driving instructor during behind-the-wheel training.
Senator Amato expressed gratitude towards Committee Chair Senator Patrick J. Diegnan, Jr., stating, "Accommodations are frequently made for individuals with disabilities in testing environments. This bill acknowledges that driver education courses are no different." He emphasized that having a familiar presence such as a parent or guardian can help disabled individuals gain the necessary skills and confidence to become safe drivers.
Currently, new drivers must complete a six-hour behind-the-wheel driving course at a school or licensed driver's school. However, Senator Amato's bill, S-3570, proposes an exception for individuals with disabilities, allowing them to have both their driving instructor and a parent or guardian present during training.
Additionally, 9th District Assemblyman Brian Rumpf and Assemblyman Gregory Myhre plan to introduce a companion bill in the Assembly.
