Today, Governor Murphy signed a bill sponsored by Senate Republican Leader Anthony M. Bucco (R-25) aimed at increasing penalties for residential home burglaries in New Jersey.
“With the Governor’s signature, New Jersey is sending a strong and clear message that individuals who burglarize homes or engage in other associated criminal activities will face severe consequences,” stated Sen. Bucco. He emphasized that law enforcement and prosecutors now have the necessary tools to address the rise in residential burglaries across the state, ensuring community safety. “After today, there should be no mistake that if you commit these crimes, you will do time.”
Recent incidents underscore the urgency of this legislative action. Detective Sgt. Monica Mosley from the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office was shot and killed during a home invasion at her residence earlier this week. Last week, Assemblyman Paul Kanitra's home in Hazlet was broken into while his family was present, and his car keys were stolen.
In another incident last week, three armed robbers entered an Atlantic County residence with occupants inside. Police reported that one individual was pistol-whipped and another was bound with tape at gunpoint.
