In response to another assassination attempt on President Donald Trump at his Florida resort, Senator Doug Steinhardt (R-23) is renewing his commitment to enhancing the security of high-profile leaders while addressing the financial burden on state and local governments.

Senator Steinhardt’s resolution urges Congress to pass the "Presidential Security Resources Reimbursement Act of 2024," which aims to ensure that state and local governments are reimbursed by the Secret Service for costs incurred in providing security. This Act, introduced by U.S. Congressman Tom Kean, Jr., is seen as crucial amid increasing threats against national leaders.

“Today's attempt on President Trump’s life underscores the urgent need for robust security measures,” said Senator Steinhardt. “It is imperative that we not only provide top-notch protection but also ensure that state and local governments are fairly compensated for their crucial role in this effort. Our communities can’t afford the bill for the added security that protects our leaders, and recent assassination attempts prove our leaders can’t afford partisan paywalls.”

The resolution highlights the need for a fair reimbursement system for using state and local resources, including personnel, equipment, and facilities when the Secret Service requires additional support. The financial strain on local governments can be significant, making it essential for Congress to act.

“Security is a priority, and the brave efforts of state and local officials should be supported,” Steinhardt added. “This resolution and Congressman Kean’s bill are critical steps toward ensuring that those who keep our leaders safe are not unfairly burdened.”

Recently, Senator Steinhardt, along with Congressman Tom Kean and Bedminster Mayor Larry Jacobs, held a roundtable discussion to develop practical solutions for enhancing protection for high-profile figures and providing financial support to affected communities.

“We must act decisively to support the local heroes who partner with the Secret Service to safeguard our leaders,” concluded Senator Steinhardt. “Our resolution is a call to Congress to address both security and fairness in our national response.”
