Senator Jon Bramnick (R-21) announced his intention to join legislation that Senator Brian Stack (D-33) plans to introduce, which would criminalize the use of signal jammers.
“Interrupting vital communications using signal jammers could lead to serious safety concerns,” said Sen. Bramnick. “Deterring individuals or groups who are intent on causing these disruptions will help ensure that New Jersey residents can continue to rely on these important utilities.”
The bill proposes making it a fourth-degree crime to interfere with or cause interference to any radio communications of any station licensed or authorized by federal law or regulation, or operated by the United States government. Additionally, it would be a violation of federal law or regulation to use any scanning receiver capable of:
- Receiving transmissions in frequencies allocated to the domestic cellular radio telecommunications service,
- Being readily altered by the user to receive transmissions in such frequencies, or
- Being equipped with decoders that convert digital cellular transmissions to analog voice audio.
