Senator Holly Schepisi (R-39) has reiterated her call for the establishment of a Government Efficiency and Regulatory Review Commission following recent events in Connecticut. The Senator expressed her concerns after Connecticut’s Governor withdrew a plan to mandate future electric vehicle purchases by 2035, citing bi-partisan pushback from Connecticut’s Legislative Regulation Review Committee.

In a statement, Senator Schepisi criticized Governor Murphy's approach, stating, “While other Democrat governors come to their senses regarding unachievable mandates for electric vehicles, Governor Murphy continues to push his agenda to make New Jersey the California of the East Coast.” She further emphasized the need to prioritize policies that do not adversely impact working and middle-class New Jersey residents.

Highlighting the potential challenges associated with such mandates, Senator Schepisi pointed out the lack of consideration for factors like the capacity of the electric grid, the costs of necessary improvements, and the financial burden on average families. She called for the establishment of the Government Efficiency and Regulatory Commission to address the increasing regulations imposed by unelected bodies.

The Senator referenced past legislative efforts, noting that in 2021, Governor Murphy vetoed a bipartisan bill aimed at creating a nine-member Government Efficiency and Regulatory Review Commission. Despite receiving strong support in the Senate and Assembly, the legislation faced a veto. However, it was reintroduced in 2022 with bipartisan sponsorship.

For those interested, the full text of the reintroduced legislation can be accessed under Senate Bill S1455.
