We have seen the footage of the violent death of Tyre Nichols at the hands of multiple police officers in Memphis, TN. The images are shocking and our hearts go out in particular to Mr. Nichols’ family and loved ones as they relive this terrible loss. 

This is another sobering reminder that while we aspire to liberty and justice for all, we are far from achieving true liberty and true justice for all people. While it appears that those responsible are in the process of being held accountable, no level of accountability can restore his life, or erase the terrible way in which he died.

Even as we mourn together, we reaffirm and redouble our commitment to working for a more just society where atrocities like this do not occur. That work is not easy, but it is undeniably urgent and we will continue to pursue it in order to help build the world we want our students to inherit.
