Senator Robert Singer (R-30) has expressed disappointment after legislation aimed at establishing a state definition of antisemitism did not advance to a full vote in the New Jersey Legislature during the current session. The bill, S-1292, was designed to address the increase in anti-Semitic incidents across New Jersey and on college campuses.
“I am very disappointed. This was a major step in clarifying antisemitism. Unfortunately, we have taken a step back in the state,” Senator Singer said.
Singer is the prime sponsor of S-1292, which has nearly two-thirds of the Legislature’s 120 members as sponsors. The bill had previously passed through committee stages with a 4-1 vote in the Senate and a unanimous 7-0 vote in the General Assembly.
State Senator Anthony M. Bucco represents New Jersey’s 25th Legislative District and serves as Senate Republican Leader and chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, according to his official website. He is also involved with sponsored legislation and committee work on state issues. Bucco provides constituent services through his district office and email for legislative inquiries, as detailed on his official website. In addition to leading as Senate Republican Leader, he participates in sponsoring bills and contributing to discussions on key issues affecting communities such as Bernardsville Borough, Boonton Town, and Denville Township.
The failure of S-1292 to reach a full legislative vote leaves efforts to define antisemitism at the state level unresolved for now.
