Senator Parker Space has urged Governor Murphy to reinstate formula-based aid for municipalities in the fiscal year 2026 budget. This aid was removed from the fiscal year 2025 state budget, impacting local communities financially.

In his communication with the governor, Senator Space highlighted the financial losses faced by municipalities within his legislative district due to a $150 million reduction in aid. “In my own legislative district, every municipality loses aid from the $150 million cut,” he stated. He provided specific examples of the impact, noting that Washington Township is set to lose $147,140 and Vernon Township will see a reduction of $194,284.

Senator Space warned that these cuts could lead to increased property taxes or reduced services if not addressed. Local governing bodies are currently adopting municipal budgets, which will reflect these changes in funding.
