New Jersey Senator Michael Testa has raised concerns about potential power shortages this summer, attributing the risk to what he describes as “reckless and short-sighted energy policies” by Trenton Democrats. This statement comes in response to a report from PJM Interconnection, which serves 65 million people across 13 states. The report suggests that while energy resources are generally sufficient under normal conditions, extreme heat could strain the grid.
Senator Testa emphasized the warnings from PJM in 2023 regarding the imbalance between retiring power plants and the slow pace of new energy projects. He stated, “If we have an extremely hot summer, we may not have enough capacity to keep the air condition on. This is the direct result of Democrat policies that prioritize ideology over reliability.”
The Summer Outlook 2025 from PJM highlights vulnerabilities due to retiring fossil fuel generators and delays in new resource implementation. “New Jerseyans deserve a grid they can count on,” said Sen. Testa, advocating for an inclusive energy strategy that incorporates natural gas and nuclear options.
In addition to his statements on energy policy, Sen. Testa has introduced legislation S-4285 aimed at abolishing the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU), claiming it fails to protect energy consumers.
