Senator Kristin Corrado has reached out to Governor Murphy, urging the restoration of transparent formula-based aid for municipalities in the upcoming fiscal year 2026 budget. This appeal follows the elimination of such aid from the fiscal year 2025 state budget.
In her letter to the governor, Senator Corrado highlighted the financial impact on municipalities within her legislative district due to a $150 million reduction in aid. “In my own legislative district, every municipality loses aid from the $150 million cut. Some of the cuts will have significant impacts. For example, Wayne Township loses $450,745,” she stated. The senator emphasized that these reductions could lead to property tax increases or affect services as local governing bodies prepare their budgets in the coming months.
Corrado also pointed out that “the cut to a fair formula property tax relief program will hit municipalities and property taxpayers hard after years of high inflation.” She noted that communities enrolled in a State-run health insurance plan would face additional challenges due to a recent 16% premium increase.
