Senate Republican Leader Anthony M. Bucco recently visited The Seeing Eye to discuss access issues faced by guide dog handlers in New Jersey. During the visit, Bucco acknowledged the organization’s significant contributions to the service dog industry. “The Seeing Eye has been a trailblazer and unwavering leader in the service dog industry for nearly a decade, empowering individuals who are blind and visually impaired to live with greater independence and dignity,” he stated.
Bucco emphasized the importance of continued collaboration, saying, “Their tireless advocacy for people with disabilities has been transformative, not only driving policies that expand access for the disability community nationwide but also by shining a light on the extraordinary work these incredible canines do every single day. I look forward to continuing our work together to achieve even greater success in the future.”
Melissa Allman, Senior Specialist of Advocacy & Government Relations for The Seeing Eye, expressed appreciation for Bucco’s support. “The steadfast support and understanding Senator Bucco has shown for Seeing Eye teams throughout his career has been immensely encouraging, especially amid growing concerns over access denials faced by guide dog handlers,” she said. Allman highlighted plans to strengthen protections for service dog handlers’ rights through legislative collaboration.
In 2018-2019, Sen. Bucco’s bill S-2849 was signed into law, designating the Seeing Eye dog as New Jersey’s state dog. Recently, he introduced bill S-3596 to increase penalties for denying access to public facilities and transportation services to service dogs and their handlers.
Founded in 1929, The Seeing Eye provides specially bred and trained dogs to assist those who are blind or have low vision. The organization is supported by private contributions and does not receive government funding.
