Senator Jon Bramnick has announced plans to introduce legislation that would create a task force focused on scams and fraud in New Jersey. The move comes as the number of fraudulent schemes targeting residents continues to rise.
“A constituent recently shared his experience with a scam, underscoring how widespread these schemes have become,” said Sen. Bramnick. “Fraudulent messages are causing financial losses and emotional distress among our most vulnerable residents, and it’s clear that the current system of deterrence isn’t enough. This task force would bring in law enforcement and public safety experts to study the issue and strengthen protections for residents.”
Currently, the Division of Consumer Affairs operates a toll-free number for reporting fraudulent activity. However, Senator Bramnick argues this measure is insufficient given recent increases in scams involving medical bills, fake Motor Vehicle Commission messages, and false property tax relief notices sent to people across New Jersey.
The proposed legislation aims to establish a task force responsible for examining different types of scams and recommending practical steps to improve protections for all residents, with an emphasis on seniors and other vulnerable groups.
